School Counselor Spotlights:

My Greatest Influences:

Influences come from many different sources which influence and inspire us in various arenas of our life. If we are speaking of the greatest influence that lead me to this career, I would have to give credit to two people. First, Ms. Shelnutt, my high school psychology teacher. Her class was where I first realized my interest in the world of psychology and/or the counseling field. However, Ms. Shelnutt, who just retired after over 40 years of teaching at North Cobb High School, was much more than a teacher. She was a mentor, a role model, an encourager, a fabulous human being and much more. She was and is a source of bright light to all who know her. She has left a legacy and some big shoes to fill, ask anyone who ever had her as a teacher, and they will agree. Her motto is ROASTL which stands for "Rock on and spread the love".  She truly made us as her students feel loved and she seemed to love her job and that made us love learning in her class. She is the reason I went on to major in psychology when I started college. Second, one of my friends from college, Alison Broughton, became a teacher and then later an AP and for several years she has been doing amazing things as a principal. Many years ago, Alison encouraged me to go back and get a degree in School Counseling. When I was in school, we didn't have elementary counselors. I thought of school counselors more as academic advisors, so I was excited to explore this option and I took her advice. This is my 15th year as a school counselor and I feel I am here as a direct influence of these two fabulous ladies.

My Goals as a School Counselor:

Honestly, my biggest goal is to make a difference in the lives of as many children as I can by showing them love, encouragement and teaching them various social/emotional life skills. Growing up in a dysfunctional home myself I know that I could have benefited from being able to talk to a school counselor. In my role as a school counselor I see situations much worse than what mine was as a child and I want these children to know that they are loved, to know that their circumstances don't define them and to know that their future can be very different than what they may have come to believe.

My Words of Wisdom:

You never know what someone is going through, what battle they are facing, so be kind, ALWAYS.
