A Cherokee County School District student has won the Georgia Award of Excellence!
Cherokee High School Class of 2022 graduating senior Sarah Liebert earned the award presented by the Georgia Department of Education to recognize graduating seniors who overcome special needs to achieve academic and/or extracurricular accomplishments.
Sarah, who is legally blind, is ranked in the top 16% of her class and is an honors and Advanced Placement (AP) student. A talented musician, Sarah is a member of the school chorus and marching band’s color guard. She was selected as a vocal finalist for the Georgia Governor’s Honors program her junior year.
She plans to study music education at Berry College and already has earned more than $29,000 in scholarships.
Teacher Amy Langston said Sarah has accomplished every accolade through perseverance: “Sarah doesn’t let being legally blind stop her from achieving her dreams.”
The Cherokee County School Board and Superintendent of Schools will honor Sarah at the May School Board meeting.
“Congratulations to Sarah on this well-earned honor and for inspiring everyone who hears your story of overcoming challenges,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brian V. Hightower said. “We’re so proud of you and wish you all the best at Berry and as you pursue your career in music education.”
