The Cherokee County School District has earned National recognition for excellence in financial reporting!
CCSD’s Office of Financial Management, which prepares all financial reports and the annual budget among its many responsibilities, this month received the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Financial Officers Association for its Fiscal Year 2020 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report.
The Comprehensive Annual Financial Report, also known as the CAFR, is considered the gold standard in financial reporting. The Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in governmental accounting and financial reporting, and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by a government and its management. To earn this recognition, a governmental organization must submit a CAFR that passes muster with an impartial panel that judges reports for high standards, which include “demonstrating a constructive spirit of full disclosure to clearly communicate its financial story and motivate potential users and user groups to read the report.”
CCSD’s CAFR, compiled by Chief Financial Officer Kenneth Owen and his staff, contains records already created by CCSD, such as financial statements, budget results, independent auditor’s report and management reports, but presents them all in one consolidated publication. The report, as well as numerous other financial and operational records, all are housed in the Open CCSD transparency section of CCSD’s website: https://www.cherokeek12.net/Content2/open-ccsd.
“Ken and his team have raised our accounting and financial reporting to new levels of professionalism and transparency with the development of its first three Comprehensive Annual Financial Reports,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brian V. Hightower said. “These reports, which are not required, demand a significant amount of time and expertise to complete and earning this national recognition demands an even higher commitment to excellence. We are so proud of the work they do every day to ensure our responsible use of taxpayer resources, and we’re so pleased to see their dedication honored with this award. Congratulations and thank you for your service!”
Mr. Owen said the recognition would not have been possible without outstanding work by his entire staff, noting the leadership in this endeavor by Executive Director of Financial Management Marjorie DeFrank and Coordinator of Financial Compliance and Reporting Jenna L. Williams. Both additionally received the Award of Financial Reporting Achievement from the Association to honor their role in preparing an award-winning CAFR.
They will be recognized by the School Board and Dr. Hightower at the School Board’s August meeting.
