A Cherokee County School District graduating senior has won a National Merit corporate scholarship!
Alexis “Lexie” Montfort of River Ridge High School has earned the National Merit James E. Casey Scholarship. She will use the $10,000 award toward her studies at the University of Georgia, where she will major in biological sciences to pursue a career in pharmacology and developing medicines.
“Congratulations to Lexie on earning this competitive scholarship,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brian V. Hightower said. “We’re proud of her many academic successes with us, as well as her service as a student leader and volunteer. We wish her the best as she heads to UGA, and we can’t wait to see all that she will accomplish.”
Lexie is one of only about 1,000 distinguished high school seniors nationwide to win corporate-sponsored National Merit Scholarship awards financed by corporations, company foundations and other business organizations. Selection is based on thorough review of academic records and college-entrance exam scores; leadership and service in their school and community; and personal essays and letters of recommendation. The James E. Casey Scholarship Program honors outstanding students who have a family member employed with UPS.
Salutatorian of the Class of 2022, Lexie also earned AP Scholar with Distinction, Georgia Key Scholar and Torch of Knowledge honors, the Presidential Award for Educational Excellence and the Zell Miller Scholarship. During her time at River Ridge, Lexie served in student government as a class officer for three years, as well as with Beta Club, National Honors Society and Future Business Leaders of America.
