Teachers Learn Classroom Strategies to Assist Students

Posted On: Tuesday, January 8, 2019

Social and Emotional Learning

CCSD teachers were back at work on Monday following the holiday break, wrapping up first semester grades and preparing for students to return.  Many also engaged in professional learning opportunities to bolster their classroom techniques and strategies.  More than 100 CCSD teachers attended a workshop on understanding Social Emotional Learning and its impact on student attitude, behavior, and achievement.  Teachers learned how to maintain a classroom environment where students can feel safe and build resilience, especially those students who have experienced trauma in their personal life and may be struggling.  The professional development was provided by education organization ASCD and CCSD Student Services as part of a CCSD focus this year on improving the ability of school staff to recognize the signs of a student in crisis and offer help to that child.

The class broke up into small groups to discuss personality types and the challenges and strengths with each.  Being aware of personality traits can help teachers better understand student behaviors and how to better manage them in the classroom.
