Cherokee County School District students earned accolades at the annual statewide literary competition!
Tome Literacy Society is a national organization dedicated to promoting reading among fourth- through 12th-grade students through club activities, community service and competition. The program also focuses on developing “self-esteem, leadership skills, strong values, and critical thinking, creativity, and imagination in the digital age.”
Students work all year on projects and papers to submit for the Tome competition based on books read from a list of 20 books called the “It List.” Some competitions, such as Reading Bowl and Book Talk, are held during the State conference called TomeCom, with other projects submitted digitally in advance.
Creekview High School senior Asha-Lee Smith earned first place in Theme Essay, won the $500 Dale Pratt Memorial Scholarship and was inducted into the Tau Omicron Mu Epsilon Honor Society.
Teasley Middle School Aisha Garcia placed first in Fan Art Competition. Liberty Elementary School fifth-grader Josiah Tucker placed second in It List Fan Art and Creekview High School Elena Kubit placed third.
E.T. Booth Middle School earned second place in the Reading Bowl competition. Team members are: Ava Bourgault, McKenzie Ho, Olivia Jackson, Audrey Kelava, Norah Luina, Lillie McFarland, Rohan Pandya, Skylee Poirrier, Eva Schwartz, Mihini Senanayake, Ashley Spina, Pradhyumna Vasishta, Luke Wright and Hailey Yager. Coaches are teacher Jamie Stahler and media specialist Amanda Graves.
Freedom Middle School won third place in the Reading Bowl competition. Team members are: Madison Burnett, Jazmyne Cheek, Natalie Cheek, Carson Cook, Dillon Dailey, Jacob Duncan, Grace Dai, Oliver Landis, Lukas Parrado, Rahne Tallent, Ridley Tallent and Sofia Yadav; coaches are media specialist Amanda Struchtemeyer and teacher Allison Cook.
“Reading and writing skills are critically important for every graduate. Tome programs encourage our students to further develop these skills outside of their classes and foster a greater love of reading,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brian V. Hightower said. “Congratulations to all of these students for their state honors – we are proud of you. Thank you to the teachers and media specialists who sponsor our Tome clubs and coach students in this competition.”
