A team of Cherokee County School District veterinary science students has been named state champions!
The Creekview High School and Creekland Middle School students competed in the Georgia FFA Veterinary Science Career Development Event where they earned first place in the junior division with a 21-point lead. The competition is designed to “promote college and career readiness by providing opportunities to develop technical knowledge and demonstrate practical skills in the field of veterinary science.”
The team is made up of ninth-graders Jameson Brooks, William Childers and Searlait Frey and eighth-grader Abigail Moore, and they are coached by Creekview HS teacher Pauline Benton. They will be recognized by the Cherokee County School Board and Superintendent of Schools at the March School Board meeting.
“Career exploration is an important educational choice we make available to all students, and we’re so proud of these students for their dedication to expanding their career skills and knowledge,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brian V. Hightower said. “The Creekview High School agriculture program and its teachers are nationally recognized for excellence, and its award-winning FFA chapter is another example of how they provide students with greater learning, leadership and competition opportunities.”
For the competition, students in grades 6-12 complete a written test, a veterinary skills practicum with oral explanation, and an identification test. Judges look for students to demonstrate professional ethics; decision-making, communication and problem-solving skills; and demonstrate technical competency with small and large animals in the areas of anatomy and physiology, clinical procedures, identification, health and safety and medical terminology.
In addition to the team’s success, Searlait placed second in the state for her individual score, with Jameson placing third and Abigail placing fifth.
