Fine Arts

The Cherokee County School District Art Education and Fine Arts curriculum encourages and supports the performing arts, the visual arts and all phases of the theatre arts. The arts are a significant and enduring aspect of cultural heritage; in addition, they provide a means of understanding human ideals and aspirations. The School District fully supports a full array of courses to allow students to express themselves artistically.

Dramatic Arts

The drama curriculum is designed to provide opportunities for the development of creative activity of students and to increase understanding and appreciation of drama. Drama classes also provide technical training in interpretation and give students experience in all aspects of play production.

Dramatic Arts Electives:

Fundamentals I-IV

Performance skills through movement, inner resources, oral interpretation, characterization, pantomime, improvisation.  Preparation, performance and critique.  A survey of theatre history.

Technical Theatre I-IV

Play selection, play direction/directing the musical, stagecraft, acting, costumes, makeup, business practices. Pre- and Post-Production, program design and layout, publicity, ticket sales, set design and construction, lighting and sound technology.

Advanced Drama I-IV

Acting and theatre, basic techniques of stage movement, use of physical expression for communication.

Musical Theatre I-IV

Introduces the style and characteristic elements of modern musical theater. Covers production staging, orchestration, voice and dance; offers an opportunity for team teaching through interdisciplinary collaboration with the chorus, band, art, technology, physical education and dance instructors. Offers opportunity for performance. Additional courses extend previously learned skills.  
 

Music

Stephen McCarthy, Band | Scott Martin, Chorus

Courses of both a performing and non-performing nature are offered with the goal of assisting the student in becoming a producer and consumer of music through participation and active listening. Classes from beginning through advanced levels are available.

Music Electives: Band

Concert Band

Provides opportunities for intermediate-level performers to increase, develop and refine performance skills and precision on a wind or percussion instrument.

Symphonic Band

Provides opportunities for advanced-level performers to increase, develop and refine performance skills and precision on a wind or percussion instrument.

Wind Ensemble

Provides opportunities for highly advanced-level performers to increase, develop and refine performance skills and precision on a wind or percussion instrument.

 

Music Electives: Chorus

Intermediate Women's Chorus

Provides opportunities for intermediate-level female performers to increase performance skills and knowledge in all-female choral singing.  Covers performance and production, analysis and theoretical studies, historical and cultural contributions and influences, creative aspects of music and appreciation of music. Organizes objectives for self-paced progress through all four levels. Stresses individual progress and group experiences.  

Intermediate Men's Chorus

Provides opportunities for intermediate-level male performers to increase performance skills and knowledge in all-male choral singing. Covers performance and production, analysis and theoretical studies, historical and cultural contributions and influences, creative aspects of music and appreciation of music. Organizes objectives for self-paced progress through all four levels. Stresses individual progress and group experiences. 

Advanced Women's Chorus

Provides opportunities for advanced-level female performers to increase performance skills and knowledge in all-female choral singing. Advanced Men's Chorus

Provides opportunities for advanced-level male performers to increase performance skills and knowledge in all-male choral singing. Covers performance and production, analysis and theoretical studies, historical and cultural contributions and influences, creative aspects of music and appreciation of music. Stresses self-paced progress and group experiences. 

 

Visual Arts

Leslie Babcock

The purpose of the visual arts curriculum is to provide various means in which students may express ideas by developing them into creative works, critically evaluating their own work and the works of others. Additionally, the curriculum assists the student in developing an understanding of the historical and cultural impact of art.

Visual Arts Electives:

Visual Arts I & II

Visual Arts I uses elements and principles of design through a variety of media, processes and resources. Visual Arts II reinforces knowledge and application of elements and principles of design. Explores two and three-dimensional media and processes.

Drawing I & II

Drawing I explores a variety of drawing techniques and media. Drawing II reinforces drawing skills and provides further exploration of drawing media.

Painting I & II

Painting I explores a variety of techniques and range of painting media through study of color theory and composition. Painting II continues to explore a variety of techniques and range of painting media through study of color theory and composition.

Ceramics I & II

Ceramics I introduces the characteristics of clay and design in clay using various techniques of construction. Ceramics II enhances level one skills and introduces formulations of basic glazes and kiln firing.

AP Studio Art

Conforms to College Board topics for the Advanced Placement Studio Art Drawing Portfolio Examination. Requires submission of original works and slides to be evaluated on quality. Provides experiences using different drawing media and approaches; designed for students interested in the practical experiences of art.
