What skills will my child learn in 3rd Grade?  Check out these tips and  activities to help your child prepare for success.

 English Language Arts

With parent/caregiver support…

  • Read and spell two-syllable words with long and short vowels, common vowel teams, and prefixes and suffixes
  • Read grade level text independently and  expressively
  • Ask and answer questions to understand key details in a literary and informational text
  • Identify the central message or main idea of a text on his/her level.
  • Make connections between historical events, scientific ideas, or steps in an informational text on his/her level
  • Identify, locate, and use text features to find key facts and information in an informational text on his/her level
  • Compare/contrast two or more versions of the same story by different authors
  • Compare/contrast most important points of two informational texts on the same topic
  • In addition to narrative and informative/explanatory texts, write opinion pieces in which they introduce a topic, use facts and definitions to develop points and provide a concluding statement.
  • Write using appropriate capitalization of    holidays, product names, and geographic names
  • Use commas and apostrophes correctly in writing
  • Participate in collaborative conversations by asking and answering questions to deepen understanding

  • Create and solve problems from real world contexts involving addition and subtraction
  • Use equations to solve addition and subtraction problems
  • Count up to 1000; counts by 2s, by 5s, and by 10s
  • Demonstrates that the three digits of a three-digit number represent amounts of hundreds, tens, and ones
  • Uses place value and properties to solve addition and subtraction problems.
  • Uses inches, feet, centimeters, and meters to estimate and measure objects
  • Create a tiling of  squares with equal rows and columns to fit a rectangular shape with no gaps or overlaps.

  • Investigates and demonstrates how pushing and pulling affect the motion of an object
  • Describes and sorts objects by physical characteristics (color, mass, length, texture, etc.)
  • Explains how structures made of small pieces (cubes, blocks) can be taken apart and put back together to make new structures
  • Explains that some changes in matter caused by heating or cooling are permanent (boiling an egg) and others are not permanent (boiling water)
  • Describes stars and explains why the sun is not the largest star even though it appears to be the largest
  • Investigates how the position of the sun changes and affects shadows
  • Identifies patterns and changes in length of day and night, seasons, and the moon over time
  • Notices and explains how weather, plants,  animals, and humans cause changes to the  environment
  • Explains and illustrates the life cycles of different living organisms (ex: cat, chicken, butterfly, plant, frog)

With parent/caregiver support…

  • Defines the concept of government and explains the need for rules and laws
  • Identifies the President and where he works, the Governor and where he works, and the Mayor and where he works
  • Locates and compares the geographic regions of Georgia; locates the Savannah, Flint, and Chattahoochee Rivers on a map
  • Identifies contributions made by James Oglethorpe, Tomochichi, Mary Musgrove, Sequoyah, Jackie Robinson, Martin Luther King Jr., Juliette Gordon Low, and Jimmy Carter; describes the cultural and geographic systems associated with each person;  describes how each person displayed positive character traits
  • Describes the Georgia Creek and Cherokee cultures of the past, the regions where they lived and how they used their resources 
  • Explains opportunity costs; identifies ways goods and services are allocated; explains how money makes trade easier than barter; describes costs and benefits of saving and spending choices

  • Understands others’ thoughts, expectations, feelings, and intentions
  • Forgives and grants grace to other children who upset them
  • Works successfully in a small group of peers while maintaining focus
  • Controls movements in games and activities by changing speed, height, direction, and types of movement (skips, slides, etc.)
  • Explores influence of family, friends, and media on health behaviors
  • Uses decision-making skills to set goals and improve health

Additionally, here are some standards-based math learning games parents can print and play with their children.

These skills were identified based on the Georgia Standards of Excellence.  These are only suggestions and students will not be expected to know all of this information at the start of the school year.  Teachers will meet students where they are and move them towards more growth.
