English Language Arts
With parent/caregiver support…
Read and spell two-syllable words with long and short vowels, common vowel teams, and prefixes and suffixes
Read grade level text independently and expressively
Ask and answer questions to understand key details in a literary and informational text
Identify the central message or main idea of a text on his/her level.
Make connections between historical events, scientific ideas, or steps in an informational text on his/her level
Identify, locate, and use text features to find key facts and information in an informational text on his/her level
Compare/contrast two or more versions of the same story by different authors
Compare/contrast most important points of two informational texts on the same topic
In addition to narrative and informative/explanatory texts, write opinion pieces in which they introduce a topic, use facts and definitions to develop points and provide a concluding statement.
Write using appropriate capitalization of holidays, product names, and geographic names
Use commas and apostrophes correctly in writing
Participate in collaborative conversations by asking and answering questions to deepen understanding
Mathematics
With parent/caregiver support…
Create and solve problems from real world contexts involving addition and subtraction
Use equations to solve addition and subtraction problems
Count up to 1000; counts by 2s, by 5s, and by 10s
Demonstrates that the three digits of a three-digit number represent amounts of hundreds, tens, and ones
Uses place value and properties to solve addition and subtraction problems.
Uses inches, feet, centimeters, and meters to estimate and measure objects
Create a tiling of squares with equal rows and columns to fit a rectangular shape with no gaps or overlaps.
Science
With parent/caregiver support…
Investigates and demonstrates how pushing and pulling affect the motion of an object
Describes and sorts objects by physical characteristics (color, mass, length, texture, etc.)
Explains how structures made of small pieces (cubes, blocks) can be taken apart and put back together to make new structures
Explains that some changes in matter caused by heating or cooling are permanent (boiling an egg) and others are not permanent (boiling water)
Describes stars and explains why the sun is not the largest star even though it appears to be the largest
Investigates how the position of the sun changes and affects shadows
Identifies patterns and changes in length of day and night, seasons, and the moon over time
Notices and explains how weather, plants, animals, and humans cause changes to the environment
Explains and illustrates the life cycles of different living organisms (ex: cat, chicken, butterfly, plant, frog)
Social Studies

These skills were identified based on the Georgia Standards of Excellence. These are only suggestions and students will not be expected to know all of this information at the start of the school year. Teachers will meet students where they are and move them towards more growth.
