CCSD Student Personal Safety Lessons
What is Erin’s Law? Erin’s Law is a state-mandated initiative designed to ensure that all students receive age-appropriate instruction on personal safety and the prevention of sexual abuse. This law emphasizes the importance of equipping children with the knowledge and skills to recognize unsafe situations, establish boundaries, and seek help when needed. The age-appropriate Child Personal Safety learning activities will focus on topics such as:
- Recognizing safe and unsafe situations.
- Understanding the concept of personal boundaries.
- Identifying trusted adults and knowing how to seek their help.
- Developing communication skills to express feelings and concerns.
A grade-level overview of the lessons can be found below:
Kindergarten: Personal Safety and Trusted Adults
Kindergarten students learn basic personal safety skills, including recognizing safe and unsafe situations, identifying trusted adults, and understanding personal space. Students practice safety strategies such as saying "No," moving away, and telling a trusted adult when something feels uncomfortable or unsafe. The lesson also introduces body safety, personal boundaries, and the difference between safe surprises and unsafe secrets.
First Grade: Personal Safety, Boundaries, and Trusted Adults
First-grade students strengthen personal safety skills by identifying trusted adults, learning about personal boundaries, and practicing how to respond to unsafe situations. Students learn the importance of respecting personal space, understanding body safety, using the "No, Go, Tell" strategy, and recognizing the difference between safe and unsafe secrets. The lesson also reviews everyday safety information, such as knowing a home address and phone number.
Second Grade: Personal Safety, Boundaries, and Respectful Interactions
Second-grade students build on personal safety concepts by learning about body autonomy, trusted adults, and healthy boundaries. The lesson explores respectful and disrespectful touches, recognizing warning signs of unsafe situations, and responding by saying "No," leaving the situation, and telling a trusted adult. Students also learn about body safety, safe versus unsafe secrets, and the importance of sharing safety concerns with trusted adults.
Third Grade: Personal Safety, Boundaries, and Bullying Prevention
Third-grade students review personal safety skills, trusted adults, and the "No, Go, Tell" safety strategy. The lesson covers respectful and disrespectful touches, body safety, safe versus unsafe secrets, and recognizing unsafe situations. Students also learn to identify bullying, understand its key characteristics, and distinguish bullying from normal conflicts or disagreements.
Fourth and Fifth Grade: Personal Safety, Healthy Relationships, and Digital Citizenship
Fourth- and fifth-grade students review personal safety skills while learning about healthy relationships, internet safety, bullying prevention, and digital citizenship. Students explore body safety, personal boundaries, safe and unsafe secrets, and the role of trusted adults. The lesson also addresses cyberbullying, protecting personal information online, recognizing unhealthy relationship behaviors, and acting as an upstander when others need help.
Middle School: Personal Safety and Human Trafficking Awareness
Middle school students learn about personal safety, abuse prevention, online safety, and human trafficking awareness. The lesson teaches students how to recognize unsafe situations, grooming behaviors, exploitation tactics, and online risks. Students learn strategies for seeking help, reporting concerns, and connecting with trusted adults and community resources.
High School: Personal Safety, Healthy Relationships, and Human Trafficking Prevention
High school students receive instruction on personal safety, healthy relationships, abuse prevention, online safety, and human trafficking awareness. Students learn to recognize unhealthy or exploitative behaviors, understand consent and healthy boundaries, identify online risks, and recognize warning signs of trafficking. The lesson emphasizes accessing support, reporting concerns, and making informed safety decisions in both online and in-person environments.
