My name is Cathy Fernandez. I am entering my 14th year as an educator and this will be my fourth year as a Falcon. If you had told me that I was going to be a teacher, I would have said that you were mistaken. Education has been the primary profession for my family and growing up I always said I was not going to carry on that tradition. I am living proof of “never say never." Here is my unconventional pathway to my career in education.
I was born in Marietta and graduated from Wheeler High School. I earned my B.A. in Sociology from Elon University in North Carolina. While in North Carolina, I conducted mediations for the juvenile and adult court systems. I later moved to Florida, where I worked for grant programs in middle schools teaching a conflict resolution curriculum. It was in Florida that I finally answered the calling to be in the classroom full time. I completed the transition to teaching program and have not looked back since. I have taught math, science, and social studies. However, social studies has been my home for the last eleven years. Through that span of time, I have taught World Geography, Ancient Civilizations, American History and Civics. I was extremely honored to be awarded Pinellas County Schools Social Studies Teacher of the Year in 2014. I just completed my masters degree in curriculum and instruction at Berry College and I am working of my specialist degree at the University of West Georgia...so the joys and challenges of being a student are very fresh in my mind.
I am grateful to be a member of the E.T. Booth family and know we are going to have a wonderful year.
