On behalf of the Secondary School Writing Centers Association (SSWCA), I would like to recognize Dr. Heather Barton for her service as SSWCA’s IWCA Representative. Heather has served in this role since early 2020, and she has previously served as a member at-large on SSWCA's board. Throughout her time with our organization, she has been an invaluable advocate for secondary school writing and peer tutoring centers nationwide.

We just concluded our annual national conference, an 8-day virtual event. We welcomed 671 attendees from 60 schools and 19 states. Our conference featured 59 pre-recorded video presentations - that logged over 4,000 views - and 18 live events. It is because of the dedication of Heather, that our conference was such a success in providing vital information to so many secondary school writing and peer tutoring centers from coast to coast.  There were five student presentations from Etowah that contributed presentations to this extraordinary virtual conference, one of only a few national conferences to feature high school presenters.

I would like to acknowledge the following ways that Heather has contributed to the secondary school peer tutoring community:

  • Attended NCTE to represent secondary writing centers, and organized the special interest group for our community
  • Hosted a SSWCA digital roundtable for conference presenters to help with technology of FlipGrid and another digital roundtable for new writing center directors.
  • Hosted live Zoom presentations during our conference, and ran our social media platforms during that conference window

Heather's service on the SSWCA board is not only indicative of her exemplary leadership skills, but it also an honorable recognition of your schools’ contributions to the growing secondary school writing center movement nation-wide.

I am very grateful for all that Heather has done and will continue to do as a leader in the secondary school writing and peer tutoring center community.
