Course offerings for theatre arts begin in middle school. Each high school offers drama classes as well as extra-curricular programs that include a fall and spring musical, dramatic productions and competitive opportunities in the Georgia High School Association One Act Play competition.
Academy Street Theatre Group (ASTG)
ASTG is an arts education program of the Cherokee County School District offering Grades 2-12 students onstage and offstage opportunities in theatre arts for the past 28 years. By audition, students study the aesthetics, history, production and critique of theatre by exploring theatre roles of research, playwriting, acting, stage management, light and sound design, costuming, make-up, special effects and the critical audience. Since 1992, the ASTG has mounted productions including Newsies, Oklahoma, Mary Poppins, Singin' in the Rain, The Wizard of Oz, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, The Little Prince, Tom Sawyer, The Prince and the Pauper, Twelfth Night, Fiddler on the Roof, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella, The Sound of Music, Once Upon A Mattress, The Music Man, and annual productions of The Best Christmas Pageant Ever.
