Congratulations to the Cherokee County School District’s 2022 STAR Students and Teachers!

The STAR, or Student Teacher Achievement Recognition, Student honor is awarded to the high school senior from each Georgia public and private high school with the highest score on any single test date of the SAT and who also ranks in the top 10 percent or top 10 students of his or her class based on grade point average.  Each honored student is invited to select his or her favorite teacher to be named that school’s STAR Teacher.

The CCSD honorees are: for Cherokee High School, a tie between STAR Student Madison Mathews and STAR Teacher Valerie Destin and STAR Student Bradley Stewart and STAR Teacher Eric Jones; Creekview High School STAR Student Benjamin Davis and STAR Teacher Wendy McCarron; Etowah High School STAR Student Quinn Sockman and STAR Teacher Tina Parmar; River Ridge High School STAR Student James Tham and STAR Teacher Tony Giles; for Sequoyah High School, a tie between STAR Student George Chemmala and STAR Teacher Andrew Oberlies and STAR Student Riley Hartman and STAR Teacher Casey Eubanks; and Woodstock High School STAR Student Steven Li and STAR Teacher Henry Oglesby.

“Congratulations to our STAR Students and Teachers – they are shining examples of exemplary academic success,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brian V. Hightower said.  “We’re so proud of these students for their dedication to academic achievement and grateful for these teachers’ investments into our students each day through outstanding instruction and caring support.  Thank you to the Canton Lions Club and the Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE) for their longtime sponsorship of this program.”

The STAR Students will compete for the overall Cherokee County title, which will be announced at the annual STAR Student and Teacher Recognition Ceremony on March 1 at the Historic Canton Theatre.  The program will be hosted by the Canton Lions Club, which has been the local sponsor since the STAR program began in 1958.

“We are very proud of all of the Cherokee County students and teachers for the academic excellence they exemplify and we are honored to continue our involvement with the PAGE STAR program,” Bobby Dyer of the Canton Lions Club said.

The overall county winner will advance to regional competition, and the 12 region winners will contend for the State PAGE STAR Student title; STAR Teachers continue with their students through these additional levels of recognition.

The CCSD honorees will be recognized by the Cherokee County School Board and Dr. Hightower at the March School Board meeting.
