IEDA – Unstructured Break Time
Descriptor Code: IEDA
Unstructured Break Time
In determining a schedule for unstructured break time for students in grades K-8, the Principal will consult with appropriate instructional personnel at the school and district levels to ensure that break time provides support for, but does not interfere with, academic learning. The Principal will also incorporate in the school’s faculty handbook guidelines regarding the length, frequency, time and location of such breaks, and the responsibility for supervision of students so that break time will accomplish its primary purpose in a safe and responsible manner.
Breaks may be withheld from students for disciplinary reasons, as determined by the teacher or Principal. Also, decisions to withhold break time will be consistent with behavioral plans developed by the school for students, including Section 504 Plans and/or Individualized Education Plans (IEPs).
