CCSD School Nutrition Wins Top State Award for Meal Quality

The Cherokee County School District continues to earn top state honors for serving fresh nutritious meals to students!

CCSD’s School Nutrition program, which serves 5 million meals annually, won the Golden Radish Award from the Georgia Department of Education School Nutrition Division.  CCSD School Nutrition has earned the award every year since the program was established in 2014.

The award honors school nutrition programs that excel in providing fresh, locally grown produce and ingredients in meals; promoting the importance of farm to school food sourcing; and participating in school garden projects.  Award criteria was developed by the Georgia Department of Education School Nutrition Division, Georgia Department of Agriculture, University of Georgia Extension and Georgia Department of Public Health.  

“Our School Nutrition program is among the best in the state and country, and Executive Director Tina Farmer and her team continue to raise the bar each year by further improving meals and service for our students,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brian V. Hightower said.  “Increasing fresh locally grown ingredients and making more items from scratch in our kitchens is an important investment in our students’ health and academic progress.  Congratulations to our School Nutrition team for serving up success!”

Ms. Farmer and CCSD School Nutrition Supervisor Toni Hedges will be honored by Georgia Superintendent of Schools Richard Woods and other state leaders at a ceremony in October.  The department also will receive school kitchen equipment donated by sponsors as part of the honor.  The Cherokee County School Board and Dr. Hightower will recognize CCSD School Nutrition for this honor at an upcoming School Board meeting.
