CCSD Celebrates 2024 Outstanding ESOL Teacher, Student
The Cherokee County School District is celebrating its Exemplary English for Speakers of Other Languages Teacher of the Year and Exemplary English Learner Student of the Year!
The 2024 honorees are teacher Coury Frush of E.T. Booth Middle School and Woodstock High School senior Giovanna “Gio” Ferreira Fuin. The Georgia Department of Education annually recognizes one outstanding ESOL teacher and English Learner student from each school district who meet high standards for teaching and learning.
Gio, who is from Brazil, not only succeeded in mastering English skills through the ESOL program, she also competed on the track and field team, earned a work study program internship at Northside Hospital Cherokee and participated in dual enrollment classes at Chattahoochee Technical College. In addition to her native Portuguese and her second language of English, she is challenging herself to also learn Spanish.
Mr. Frush, who has taught ESOL students for two years, is being honored for his excellence in instruction and his schoolwide advocacy for multilingual learners. This includes his initiative to lead professional development sessions for non-ESOL teachers to help them better understand the learning challenges these students overcome.
The Cherokee County School Board and Superintendent of Schools Mary Elizabeth Davis will recognize the honorees at an upcoming school board meeting.
