CCSD Schools Earn Top State AP Honors

CCSD Schools Earn Top State AP Honors

Cherokee County School District’s high schools, for the 13th consecutive year, have earned the state’s top honors for outstanding Advanced Placement (AP) programs and performance!

All of CCSD’s high schools this week were named 2023 AP Honor Schools for exceptional student performance and participation on AP exams, which offer students more challenging coursework and the opportunity to earn college credit.

“We’re incredibly proud of our AP program and teachers and the continued success of our high school students who challenge themselves with these college-level courses,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brian V. Hightower said.  “Our community’s investment in the AP program provides our students with the opportunity to expand their knowledge in subjects across academics and the arts and set themselves up for greater college and career success.  Thank you to everyone who makes this opportunity and their success possible.”

Students who achieve a 3 or higher (on a scale of 1 to 5) can qualify for college credit at most State colleges and universities, thereby avoiding college tuition payments for those classes.  CCSD students through AP course credit earn nearly $4 million a year in Georgia in-state college tuition, assuming each exam equals just one college course.  CCSD high schools offer more than 30 different AP courses.

Schools can achieve AP Honor School recognition in various categories based on participation and performance.  All six CCSD high schools again earned recognition as AP STEM and AP STEM Achievement Schools, and five – Cherokee HS, Creekview HS, Etowah HS, River Ridge HS and Sequoyah HS – also were named AP Humanities and AP Humanities Achievement Schools.  Five schools – Creekview HS, Etowah HS, River Ridge HS, Sequoyah HS and Woodstock HS – additionally earned AP School of Distinction Honors.

“The number of AP Honor Schools increased by more than 14%, which serves as a testament to our commitment to expand opportunities for Georgia students, including in advanced and accelerated coursework,” State Superintendent of Schools Richard Woods said. “I sincerely congratulate each of this year’s AP Honor Schools on their achievement.  Additionally, I thank each teacher, student, and school- and district-level administrator for their diligent work creating strong AP opportunities.”
