CCSD Senior Earns State Positive Athlete Scholarship

A Cherokee County School District graduating senior has earned a Positive Athlete Georgia statewide competitive scholarship!

River Ridge High School graduating senior Catherine McNutt is one of only nine students in Georgia to earn a state level scholarship from the nonprofit organization.  Positive Athlete Georgia annually presents state and regional scholarships and awards to further its mission of promoting the benefits of positivity to young athletes worldwide.

The scholarships are presented by the organization in conjunction with sponsoring businesses.  Catherine, who played lacrosse for the Knights and is headed to the University of Alabama, won the $1,000 Gamer Award sponsored by Stars and Strikes.  She also earned the regional top girls lacrosse player award from Positive Athlete Georgia earlier this year.  Winner of the Miss Cherokee Rose Outstanding Teen competition, Catherine plays mellophone for the school marching band and French horn with the Georgia Youth Symphony Orchestra Philharmonic and serves as editor for the school newspaper.

“Congratulations to Catherine on earning this scholarship, which honors not only her dedication to athletics, but also her great care for her community,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brian V. Hightower said.  “She has been an outstanding advocate for students with dyslexia, and we can’t wait to see all she will do as she heads off to college and future successes.” 

To earn honors, students must be nominated by coaches, principals, athletic directors, teachers and parents.  Judges review not only their demonstrated excellence in athletics, but also how they show an optimistic attitude, teammate encouragement, servant leadership, heart for others, ability to admit imperfections, giving 100 percent all the time, and realizing the team as more important than the individual.

In addition to Catherine’s honors, four CCSD students earned regional scholarships, nine other CCSD student athletes and a coach earned regional individual awards and Creekview High School earned the regional overall school award.
