CCSD Students Win Aviation Scholarships

Six Cherokee County School District students have earned aviation scholarships named in honor of two longtime pilots!

The Don Stevens and Bob Burns Memorial Scholarships, awarded by the Cherokee County Educational Foundation, honor students who attend a Cherokee County School District high school and are pursuing a private pilot’s license.  

The two students receiving $10,000 scholarships are River Ridge High School senior Taylor Free, who will attend Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, and Etowah High School junior Isabella Latham, who will earn her private pilot license program with Phoenix Air.  The four students receiving $500 scholarships are: Cherokee High School senior Justin Baumaister, Etowah High School senior James Bouchard, Woodstock High School senior Christian Werner, and Cherokee High School junior Blake Alan Young.  Congratulations to the selected students and thank you to the families and CCEF for your sponsorship! Our School Board is laser focused on ensuring our students are learning more, growing more, and achieving more in our classrooms than they could anywhere else.

A Delta Airlines retired captain, the late Mr. Stevens was the longtime chairman of the Cherokee County Airport Authority.  The late Mr. Burns spent 50 years in aviation as a Delta and corporate pilot and an instructor.  To honor their legacies, their families created the scholarships with the assistance of CCEF to help students with the expenses of training and obtaining their licenses.
