CCSD Students Win Community Memorial Aviation Scholarship

Three Cherokee County School District students have earned community aviation scholarships dedicated to the memory of a longtime pilot.

The Don Stevens Memorial Scholarship program supports CCSD high school students pursuing their private pilot's license.  A Delta Airlines retired captain, the late Mr. Stevens was the longtime chairman of the Cherokee County Airport Authority.  

The scholarship was created by his family, with the assistance of the Cherokee County Educational Foundation, to help students with the expenses of training for their private pilot’s licenses.  The scholarship committee this spring selected the winners of the third annual awards.  

Cherokee High School rising junior Garrett Williams won the $10,000 Don Stevens Memorial Aviation Scholarship.  He plans to pursue his flight training at Phoenix Air Flight School.  A major in Cherokee High’s Air Force Junior ROTC program, Garrett plans to serve in the U.S. Air Force as a fighter pilot.

“Before I joined JROTC, I didn't know the importance of teamwork, communication and leadership or where I wanted my life to head,” he said.  “These experiences have shown me what I want to do with my life and what type of career I want to build for myself and my future family.  I had never thought about joining the military before joining JROTC and have found it immeasurable in the planning of my future.”

Cherokee HS rising junior Jack McGuigan, who also plans to serve in the U.S. Air Force, and Woodstock HS Class of 2024 recent graduate Landon Robinson, who will attend Auburn University in the fall, each received the $500 Private Pilot Ground School Scholarships.

The Cherokee County School Board and Superintendent of Schools Mary Elizabeth Davis will recognize the winners at the next School Board meeting.
