CCSD Teams Excel at National JROTC Competition

Two Cherokee County School District teams are national Junior ROTC Raiders champions!

The Etowah High School Air Force JROTC team won the Master Division Mixed Team National Championship and the River Ridge High School Air Force JROTC team won the Challenge Division Male Team National Championship at the Raider National Championships.

“Congratulations to our River Ridge and Etowah Raiders on this amazing sweep at nationals!” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brian V. Hightower said.  “We’re proud of your dedication to physical fitness, military skills, teamwork and leadership that made this success possible.  Congratulations and thank you to your teacher-coaches for their commitment to your continued growth and achievement.  Our Junior ROTC programs offer students outstanding learning and skill building opportunities both in the classroom and through co-curricular programs and competitions like this event.”

The multi-event military style athletic competition, which recently was held at Gerald Lawhorn Boy Scout Camp in Molena, includes a 4K run, half-mile physical fitness test, rope bridge test and the gauntlet, a half-mile obstacle course.

The Etowah team includes: Austin Brice, who was named the No. 1 “Ultimate Raider” Male competitor at the event; Cheyenne Bradley, Kendrick Brice, Davis Clanton, Westin Coleman, Trynt Dean, Jeffery Meadows, Samantha Moore, Emily Pacheco, Trey Petrey, Leah Schmid and Aleksandria Troy.  The team is coached by Etowah HS AFJROTC teacher Lt. Col. (Ret.) Steven Bergey.

The River Ridge team includes: Jennings Banks, Andrey Chon-Perez, Ethan Cruz, Hunter Daniel, Peyton Daniel, Trenton Elario, Ayden Garrett, Ethan Holland, Gabriel Idrogo, Chase Leiker, Quoc Nguyen, Ruben Ramirez, Daniel Tulloch and Sergio Villegas Espana.  The team is coached by River Ridge HS AFJROTC teachers Major (Ret.) Marlon Ayers and Chief Master Sgt. (Ret.) Rodney Deese.            

The Cherokee County School Board and Dr. Hightower will recognize the teams at the school board’s next meeting.
