Celebrating National Principals Month: Dr. Carolyn Daugherty of Bascomb ES!

October is National Principals Month! Our Principals are amazing instructional leaders dedicated to ensuring our students learn more, grow more, and achieve more in our classrooms than they could anywhere else!  We’re recognizing these inspiring leaders with special posts throughout the month. Please join us in thanking them for all they do to support our mission of being the highest performing school district in Georgia.

Bascomb Elementary School Principal Dr. Carolyn Daugherty

Why did you want to become a teacher?
I am the cliché story of "my mom was a teacher."  Watching the impact she made on students from their academic growth to making sure they had a snack each day looked like the most rewarding thing anyone could do, and it was.

Who was the most influential teacher in your life?
My mom didn’t teach me, but I watched her journey for her almost 25 years in CCSD.  Her grace, talent, growth mindedness, and positive spirit she brought not just to her classroom, but to the overall school culture was inspirational.

What’s a favorite memory from your first year as a teacher?
I was teaching third grade at Little River ES and we went on an extended field trip to the Tennessee Aquarium and Ruby Falls.  I was terrified of losing a student, but it ended up one of the best days ever.

How did teaching prepare you to be a Principal?
Teaching gave me leadership experiences that led to my desire to move into school leadership. Leading a team, participating in SAC, heading up special projects -- those opportunities lit a fire, and I could not feel more blessed.
