Five CCSD Class of 2023 Graduating Seniors Win $25,000 Local Scholarships

Five CCSD Class of 2023 Graduating Seniors Win $25,000 Local Scholarships

Five Cherokee County School District Class of 2023 graduating seniors have earned $25,000 college scholarships from a community foundation!

It is the fourth year of the annual college scholarships presented by the Jason T. Dickerson Family Foundation.  This spring, the foundation planned to award two $25,000 scholarships, but its board was so impressed by the caliber of the applicants, they decided to award five scholarships!

The winners are: of River Ridge HS, Cassandra Ellenberger and Chloe Gohlke; of Sequoyah HS, Danielle Kremer; and of Woodstock HS, Madison Mejia and Grace Needham.

The foundation considers applicants’ academic record, community service, essay questions and their references’ recommendations.  Additional requirements are set by the foundation each year.  This year’s scholarship was limited to graduating CCSD seniors planning a career in veterinary medicine.  The application this year also required at least 50 hours of documented community service in support of animal welfare such as with animal shelters, humane societies, etc.

Mr. Dickerson, who serves as the foundation’s chairman, said the decision-making process, which involved interviewing finalists, was challenging but incredibly encouraging.  “This year’s finalists were on another level,” he said.  “We enjoyed talking to each one of them and witnessing their excitement and vision for their future.”

Cassandra, who volunteers at Hidden Acres Animal Sanctuary, plans to study animal science, veterinary science or zoology at Kennesaw State University.  Chloe, who volunteers with Georgia House Rabbit Society, will study animal science and pre-veterinary medicine at Berry College.

Danielle, who volunteers with Save the Horses and BEATS Inc., plans to study animal health at the University of Georgia and pursue a career as a veterinarian.

Madison, who fosters kittens and works at Trickum Ridge Animal and Allatoona Animal Hospital, is headed to the University of Georgia to begin her path toward a veterinary degree and opening a veterinary practice in Cherokee County.  Grace, who works at Highway 92 Animal Hospital, plans to study animal health at the University of Georgia and earn her doctorate at its College of Veterinary Medicine.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brian V. Hightower thanked Mr. Dickerson and his family for their continued strong support of CCSD students.

“The Dickersons do so much for our community, and these scholarships, to me, are their greatest gifts,” he said.  “They are investing in our next generation by supporting students who possess big dreams and big hearts.  Congratulations to our winners and best wishes as you pursue your degrees and careers!”
