Laura Brown of Creekland Middle School

A 20-year educator, Laura Brown teaches eighth-grade Special Education science at Creekland Middle School. She has taught for her entire career with CCSD, beginning as a Special Education co-teacher across all middle school subjects, then reading and English language arts before taking on her current role.

What inspired you to become a teacher?
My mom was a kindergarten teacher for more than 30 years and taught generations of families in her community. Seeing the love and respect her students and their families had, and still have, for her helped me realize that teaching is more than just a job — it is an opportunity to impact generations.

What do you find most rewarding about your job?
The most rewarding part of my job is the people I work with. I am surrounded by a community of like-minded educators who show up every day committed to making a difference in the lives of middle school students. This work is challenging, and we could not do it without supporting and leaning on one another. The faculty and staff at Creekland Middle School truly are the best.

How do you elevate the excellence in your classroom?
My students are preparing for high school. While mastering curriculum standards is important, true excellence also means being ready to succeed beyond middle school. I intentionally embed self-advocacy skills into daily instruction, teaching students how to clearly and appropriately communicate their needs. These life skills help prepare them for long-term success in high school and beyond.
