Woodstock High School Class of 2023 graduating senior Ryan Capozzi has earned this year’s Waste Management/Pine Bluff Landfill Scholarship!

The $5,000 scholarship is presented to a graduating senior each year as part of the company’s partnership agreement with CCSD.  The designated school rotates annually, with Woodstock HS selected for the Class of 2023 school, and all graduating seniors from the designated school have the opportunity to apply.  This is the 16th anniversary of the scholarship.  A committee of community, Waste Management and CCSD representatives reviews and scores applications to select a winner who has excelled in academic, extra-curricular activities and community service.

Ryan is headed to Georgia Tech to study computer science.  A scholar athlete, Ryan is a captain for Woodstock’s lacrosse team as well as a four-year member of the Math Honors Society.  He also is a member of the National Honors Society and Future Business Leaders of America.  Ryan has worked part-time for Little River Marina and Publix and also volunteers in the community, including as a coach for his school’s junior lacrosse program.

“Ryan is an excellent leader who has a huge heart,” teacher and lacrosse Coach Mason Wren said.  “I've known Ryan for seven years and he is an incredible young man who is bright in the classroom and excels on the lacrosse field as well.”

The scholarship presentation was made by Marla Prince of Waste Management at the Cherokee County School Board’s May meeting, during which Ryan was recognized by the School Board and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brian V. Hightower.

“Congratulations to Ryan on earning this competitive scholarship,” Dr. Hightower said.  “We’re proud of your successes as a student, and especially proud that you found time in your busy schedule to volunteer to help others.  Thank you to Waste Management and Pine Bluff Landfill for investing in our students through this scholarship.”
