February is Black History Month and today we would like to recognize Bessie Smith. In order to earn some money at a young age, she and her brother performed on the street by singing and dancing and playing guitar. Eventually she began singing in black theaters in Chattanooga. When she was 29 she began her recording career in Philadelphia. She was very popular and became the highest-paid black entertainer of the early 1900s. She toured the country in her own custom-built railroad car and was named “The Empress of the Blues”. Smith worked with many other greats including Ma Rainey and Louis Armstrong and recorded over 160 songs.

There will be a Friday Sunset balloon release for Cameron at 5:30 in the Mill Creek bus lanes.

FCA will meet this Friday at 7:30 in the auditorium. All are welcome!
