February is Black History Month and today we would like to recognize Thurgood Marshall. Marshall was born in Baltimore, Maryland and was descended from slaves on both sides. He graduated a year early from high school and attended law school. When he was 32 he won a Supreme Court case and founded the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund. In his position as director, he argued many cases in front of the Supreme Court, including Brown v. Board of Education. In 1967 President Johnson nominated him to the Supreme Court and he was confirmed, the first African American to serve on the court.
