A Cherokee County School District Class of 2022 graduating senior has earned a $25,000 college scholarship from a community foundation!

It is the third year of the annual college scholarships presented by the Jason T. Dickerson Family Foundation.  The scholarship requirements, beyond the perennial requirement for community service, are set by the foundation each year.   This year’s scholarship application was limited to students planning a career in veterinary medicine, with one scholarship awarded.

Keira McHugh of River Ridge High School has been named the Class of 2022 winner of the scholarship, which she will use to fund her studies at the University of Georgia.  She plans to pursues a career as a veterinarian in a rural area.

Mr. Dickerson, who serves as the Foundation’s chair, said the decision-making process, which involved interviewing finalists, took many days of deliberation.  The Foundation considers applicants’ academic record, community service, essay questions and their references’ recommendations.  “This was an extremely tough decision, as all of the applicants were fantastic and each one was deserving of the scholarship,” he said.

As a student at River Ridge, Keira has participated in numerous clubs and competed on the swim team, volunteered at animal shelters and worked as a summer camp counselor.

The scholarship, Keira said, will mean that, instead of working a part-time job at college, she can volunteer in different fields of veterinary services and participate in internships and research opportunities.

Keira said she has wanted to be a veterinarian for as long as she can remember to positively impact the lives of animals and the people who care for them.

“I hope to help animals and their owners through some of their most difficult days by providing care, support, and consistency when they need it most,” she said.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brian V. Hightower said the Dickerson family’s continued support of CCSD students is greatly appreciated.

“We’re so grateful for their generosity and the positive difference it makes in the lives of our students,” he said.  “Congratulations to Keira on winning this scholarship and best wishes as you pursue your degree and your dreams!”
