CCSD 2020 Discover Ed DENny Award winners 6 3 20

Two Cherokee County School District educators have earned national awards for excellence in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education!

Discovery Education, a national leader in STEM teaching and part of the same organization as the Discovery TV network, annually presents the Discovery Educator Network (DEN) Awards, known as the DENny Awards, to recognize educators “who have contributed to the growth of community through teaching or leading.”  This school year, CCSD partnered with Discovery Ed to further enhance its STEM educational opportunities for students.

Dr. Erin Jacobs, a CCSD Office of Curriculum & Instruction administrator overseeing STEM education, earned a 2020 DENny Award in the category of Leadership.  Brad Mann, who teaches technology connections classes at Dean Rusk Middle School, earned a 2020 DENny Award in the category of Creativity.  They are among only 76 educators nationwide to earn 2020 DENny Awards.

“Every student needs the opportunity to expand their STEM knowledge, spark their creativity, sharpen their critical-thinking skills and explore career possibilities,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brian V. Hightower said.  “One visit to Brad’s classroom, where student-designed Lego robots battle and student-dreamed creations print in 3D, shows you he has mastered the art of creatively engaging kids in STEM learning.  Erin has led our District through a STEM upgrade over the past year, with expanded teacher training and resources and new programs like Sprouting STEMS - through which high schoolers share STEM learning with elementary schoolers through hands-on projects.  Congratulations to you both on this well-deserved honor and thank you for all you do!”

Honorees will receive awards, certificates and digital badges from Discovery Education and will be recognized through the organization’s website and social media.
